Two servants carrying lanterns are approaching along a narrow path. The rocks and terrain have been drawn in grasslike, fibrous texture strokes and contour lines; the pines have been modeled to look archaic and primeval. Sun K’o-hung, a native of Sungkiang, served for a time as an official but lost interest in politics and returned home, where he occupied himself with his collection of paintings and antiquities. He excelled at painting flowers and plants from life; he also painted plum blossoms and bamboo, the latter sometimes in vermilion ink. His landscapes were influenced by the Sung painters Mi Fu and Ma Yuan.
