His tzu (style name) was Hsun-chih and his hao (sobriquet) Yen-k’o; he often signed his works with Hsi-lu lao-jen, Hsi-t’ien chu-jen, Ou-hsieh tao-jen, and Kuei-ts’un lao-nung. A man of superior intelligence, Wang Shih-min was highly educated and knowledgeable about antiquities. His landscape compositions showed respectful attention to the Four Great Yuan Masters, and in his later years, he concentrated on achieving the essence of Huang Kung-wang’s brushwork. This painting, executed when the artist was 79 yeaers old, illustrates the characteristically wet brush and the unique inspiration that made Wang Shih-min so renowned. The lines still retain their original freshness and vigor.
