Hsu excelled at most subject matter, such as landscapes, figures, ruled-line architecture, birds-and-flowers, and grasses-and-fish. In this work, stately lotuses rise straight up from the water below. Their gorgeously full blossoms and verdant leaves appear vividly fresh and luxurious. They were first outlined with brushstrokes and then filled with washes of color. The veins of the leaves and blossoms were delicately outlined and washed with white and blue to make them solid, but not heavy. The artist rendered the elegant beauty and poise of the lotus.
