Wang Yűan-ch’i (whose style-name was Mao-ching and sobriquet, Lu-t’ai) was a native of T’ai-ts’ang, Kiangsu. He was a grandson of the noted artist and collector Wang Shih-min. In 1670 he received his Advanced Degree and later served in several high official positions. Wang learned to paint from having grown up in the refined artistic atmosphere of his family, and his style surpassed that of his contemporaries. He was included among the “Four Great Masters of the Ch’ing Dynasty.” In his middle years, Wang served in the central government, where he was also very active in painting and often worked by imperial command. At the age of sixty-four he compiled the Pei-wen-chai shu-hua pu, an annotated catalogue of calligraphy and painting. He also took charge of the production of the depiction of the K’ang-hsi Emperor’s birthday celebration.
