He excelled at poetry, loved wine, was adept at preparing tea leaves, and was skilled at calligraphy and landscape painting. He had many followers in the Yangtze and Huai river areas that became collectively known as the Kiangsi school. A brush drenched with ink has been wielded without restraint in this painting. The untreated paper has soaked up the ink to produce this intimate view of a river with trees. One might say that while the brushwork possesses a quality of directness, it retains a touch of rawness. The work was completed in 1704, when the artist was 82 years of age.
