He excelled at painting landscapes and birds-and-flowers. In this painting, the artist has focused on outlining the branches and leaves as well as rendering the bird in a light and easy manner. The branch of the firmiana tree extends diagonally down from the top of the hanging scroll as a Java sparrow sits perched on it. Under the weight of the bird, the branch and leaves appear to waver slightly. In the upper left corner of this spacious composition, the artist inscribed the following; “Painting an old firmiana tree in the colors of autumn.”
