His style name was Lung-yu. During the late Wan-li. period (1573-1620) he served as an official. Well-versed in the classics, he was a lover of learning and skilled in painting, his landscapes being especially excellent. The painter and critic Tung Ch’i-ch’ang praised him profusely. A spray of bamboo, a corner of rock and a clump of orchid are rendered in several sensitive and spirited strokes of the brush. The artist completed this painting in 1638 when he was forty-two years of age. The work reveals the painter executing this picture with great pleasure at his leisure.
