A skilled landscape painter highly respected among literati of Wu, his brushwork has an archaic quality with ink appearing moist and lush. He did realistic figures, which he also specialized in. A forest of pines in snow contrasts with a beautiful palace here. The composition is complex and varied, the brushwork finely detailed. The arrangement of wintry trees, pines, and moss dots enlivens the scene with much rhythm. Zhang’s method is marvelous, particularly in his suggesting snow by leaving blank white patches. The background is further embellished with marvelous applications of gold powder for a glittering winter’s snow in the sun.(20120103)@#@@#@內容簡介(英文)@#@Chang Hung (style name Chun-tu; sobriquet Ho-chien) was a native of Wu prefecture (modern Soochow), Kiangsu province. He was a skilled landscape painter and was highly respected among the literati of the Wu prefecture. His brushwork possessed an archaic quality, and his ink appeared moist and lush. He was also known for his realistic portrayal of human figures. A forest of pines covered in snow is set against the contrast of a beautiful palace in this painting. The composition is complex and varied, and the brushwork is finely detailed. The arrangement of wintry trees, pines and dots of moss enlivens the scene with rhythmic feeling. Chang’s painting technique is marvelous, particularly his ability to suggest snow in areas where he has left white patches. Even more unique and skillful is the application of gold powder in the background, which communicates a sense of twinkling winter snow under a clear sun.
