He was a skilled landscape painter whose style was modelled after the earlier artists Fan K’uan, Chao Meng-fu, Huang Kung-wang and Wang Meng. Contemporaries marveled at his familiarity with earlier painting and his ability to use this knowledge to form a style that was entirely new. In this painting, one crane soars in the sky while the other perches atop a pine tree. The birds’ master watches by a stone balustrade, the cage by his side. The brushwork and application of colors are light and elegant. Su Shih (1036-1101) wrote “A Record of Releasing Cranes”, in which he said, “Mountain man Mr. Chang has two cranes which are very tame and like to fly. In the morning he releases them and they go where they please. In the evening they return.” Kuan Ssu’s painting may be an illustration of this story.
