His style name was Tzu-ch’uan, his sobriquet Yuan-chou and Wu-hu. He received his chin-shih degree in 1538. A student of Wen Cheng-ming’s, Lu excelled in poetry, classics, painting and calligraphy and was able to maintain “four excellences” for which his master was widely acclaimed. Executed in light color, this work depicts a scholar sitting beneath the shade of a tree. His hand holds a scroll and he chants his text as he faces the mountains. The brush is wielded powerfully, and when compared with that of his teacher Wen Cheng-ming, more freely. But the refined and subtle flavor pervading the painting reveals that Lu has well attained and conveyed the true essense of Wen Cheng-ming. The inscription states that the work was completed in 1544 when the artist was thirty-one years old.
