He was extremely talented, but was by nature somewhat carefree and lived an unrestrained, somewhat decadent life. In 1498, he earned the highest score on the Nanking Provincial examinations, but was later implicated in the bribing of a judge at the imperial examinations. Disgraced and demoted to the status of an office clerk, T’ang abandoned his official career and devoted himself to poetry, painting and calligraphy. As he wrote in the preface to his book Liu-ju chu-shih’s Painting Manual, “I have discarded all my worldly possessions. All I ask is to amuse myself with painting,” T’ang Yin studied painting from Chou Ch’en and also experimented with the style of Shen Chou. Because of this, his renderings of figures and forms closely resemble the early works of Shen Chou. This painting was probably painted before T’ang Yin was twenty-eight years old.
