Known for his magnanimous character, he was gifted in poetry and calligraphy. He not only excelled at painting landscapes, he also rendered fruit and animal subjects. The trunk of an old pine tree coiled with vines appears in this work. The main branch at one side diagonally extends from the right down to the left, parallel to the trunk, creating an interesting effect. With the focus on only a small part of the pine, the composition here is abbreviated. The brushwork appears cursive and unplanned yet evidently robust. This work was done by Shen Chou at about the age of 70. In addition, the inscription indicates it was done for a friend as a birthday blessing.@#@@#@內容簡介（英文）@#@1496 Shen Chou Old Pine The trunk of an ancient pine tree, entwined with wisteria, is represented slanting upward from left to right. A branch on the left slants downward at the same angle. The brush is spontaneous and full of force. According to Shen Chou’s inscription, “Old Pine” was painted for his friend Chu Shou-che. It is undated, but on stylistic grounds it can be placed around 1496, when Shen Chou was 69.
