A gifted poet, calligrapher and painter, he was especially noted for his landscape paintings. He was said to have been influenced by the Yuan master, Wu Chen, and is often mentioned with other early Ming painters such as Tu Ch’iung, Hsu Yu-chen, Shen Chen-chi and Shen Heng-chi. The painting depicts the artist and a friend enjoying themselves in the Ch’ing-pai Studio. The composition is tightly constructed, delineated with soft, dark brushstokes and accented with wet, moss-dotting. Liu Chueh’s painting style made a distinct impression on Shen Chou, one of the great masters of the middle Ming period.
