One bird preens its feathers while the other descends into the water. Although the traditional title of the mentions doves, the webbed feet of the birds depicted here indicates that they are probably a species of wild duck. Above the birds are layers of camellia, bamboo, rocks and plum blossoms as well as a sparrow. The blossoms have all been defined using outlines, which, despite their difference in terms of coarseness, are elegant and prominent. The use of mineral colors and white is also extremely deft.
