His style name was Ching-chung, his sobriquet Tan-ch'iu-sheng. A man of letters, he served as a special academic official at the imperial court, and was ordered to inspect and evaluate all calligraphy and painting in the imperial collection. He was also a connoisseur of antiquities, and had an eye unequalled by others of his time. His poetry and prose were excellent, as was his calligraphy. His landscape painting was quite good, and his bamboos superb. A figure in a thatched pavilion gazes at the water, while his attendant waits on the bank. The distant mountain on the left side is dotted with heavy ink, representing mosses; layers of clouds are massed against the mountain peaks. The brushwork has a refined and elegant quality, and creates vast distances in mountains and valleys. Painted with a full brush, the work possesses an antique simplicity and harmony.
