Excelling at poetry and calligraphy, Li Shih-hsing's paintings of bamboo and rocks also followed in the family tradition. In this work, a short pine tree appears on a rocky slope accompanied by short, leafy bamboo sprouting upwards. Only two branches of the pine are adorned with needles; the rest are bare as they crisscross and show off the beauty of the powerfully twisting trunk. As seen here, the pine also stands out for its longevity. The brushwork is pure yet forceful, and the bark of the pine appears quite rugged. The bamboo and stones, on the other hand, are shown with less variation to their forms.
