Behind the rock lies a clump of bamboo: the leaves have been rendered as if 'the spring mountains were spiting out clouds'-gently but substantially. On a branch of the withered tree rests a mountain bird, beautifully and simply executed. Looking carefully at the brushwork, the painting seems pregnant with the stylistic qualities of the early Yuan dynasty. It seems moreover, indistinguishable from some of the works of Chao Meng-fu (1254-1322).
