Travelers ride and converse on donkeys with attendants behind carrying their load. Some of the trees have already withered, a sense of autumn pervasive throughout. At a crevice in the lower left is a signature for “Guo Xi.” Despite the powerful and erect pose of the tall pines and the “crab-claw” texture strokes for the branches in this painting all being linked to the spirit of those in Guo Xi’s renowned “Early Spring,” the majestic and imposingly monumental manner of “Early Spring” is not found here, nor is the ability to travel and reside vicariously about the landscape scenery. Furthermore, the compositional arrangement as well as the use of brush and ink in this work are comparatively quite distant from his masterpiece, suggesting this work was done by a later painter with Guo Xi’s name added to it.(20110913)
