The surface of this porcelain vase features beautiful decoration on a background of blue and other colors. The four panels have landscapes of the four seasons accompanied by imperial poetry. The texts are abridged from old works by the Qianlong emperor before he ascended to the throne and written in four script types: clerical, regular, running, and seal. Painted in red at the end of the sentences are two seals for "Calligraphy of Qianlong" and "Refined and unified." On the underside is a six-character clerical-script reign mark in underglaze-blue that reads, "Made in the Qianlong reign of the Great Qing." This piece survives as one of a pair and is recorded in court display archives dated to 1835. The record also indicates that the Qianlong emperor in 1743 ordered cases made for them. Since the neck here can be turned, the vessel can be used to indicate the four seasons as well. (Yu Pei-chin)
