董其昌書法初學顏真卿、鍾繇、王犧之,中年以後廣搜博採,擷取古人特長,晚年更以己意融合晉唐宋人筆意而臻大成。本幅為七十八歲所書,運筆圓熟遒健,行間布置勻稱,是晚年用意之作。@#@@#@內容簡介(英文)@#@Tung Ch'i-ch'ang (style name hsuan-tsai) was a native of Hua-t'ing, Sungkiang. Having received his chin-shih civil service degree in 1589, he went on to serve in various posts, such as Assistant Commissioner of Education in Hu-Kuang, Vice minister of Ceremonies, Gentleman of Rites, and minister of Rites in Nanking (appointed 1625). In terms of painting and calligraphy, Tung was an artist, critic, theorist, collector, connoisseur, and author all in one. He thus became an extremely influential artist of the late Ming dynasty(1368-1644).
In calligraphy, Tung Ch'i-ch'ang first studied the styles of Yen Chen-ch'ing (709-785), Chung Yu (151-230), and Wang Hsi-Chih (303-365). After Tung's middle years, he searched far and wide to choose from the best of the ancients' calligraphic styles. In his later years, he fused the styles of Chin (317-420), Tang (618-907), and Sung (960-1279) calligraphers to eventually form his own great synthesis. This scroll was done at the age of 77. The brushwork is polished and forceful, thus being a concerted effort of his later years.
