His style name Chung-shun and his sobriquet was Mi-kung, sometimes written Mei-kung. As a boy he was prodigiously gifted, steeping himself in philosophy and history. He was a poet and essayist as well as on accomplished calligrapher and painter, taking Su Tung-p’o and Mi Fei as his models. He was particularly fond of painting plum trees and bamboos. His strong elegant paintings have none of the common-place sweetness of the Wu school.
