At the time, he was as famous as Tung Ch'i-ch'ang. In his later years, he lived in seclusion at Mt. She, where he focused on painting, calligraphy and writing. Often invited by the emperor to come out of retirement, he refused (hence his nickname "Prime Minister of the Mountains").
Ch'en's calligraphy followed the styles of Su Shih and Mi Fu. His use of brush was quick and forceful. This work is a refinement of the essence of his style, resulting in the condensed and sometimes heavy quality. The strokes are rounded and plump, and the characters occasionally elongated. This is from Album of Folded Fans by Ming Calligraphers.
