A Presented Scholar (jinshi) of 1589, he was Minister of Rites. Exceptionally talented in calligraphy and painting, he was a fine collector and connoisseur, too. His semi-regular script was marvelous, the best in his day. This work transcribes the poetry of Xiao Song and praises Zhang Yue (667-730) and the literary rise of the Jixian Academy in the Tang dynasty. The regular script brushwork here is natural and powerful with the characters dynamic, following the spirit of Yan Zhenqing’s (709-785) regular script. But even more attention is paid to variations in brushwork and looser line tension, so it can be called Dong Qichang’s own style in the pursuit of Yan’s spirit.(20100711)
