He was gifted at poetry, calligraphy, and painting. After his middle years, he took interest in the elongated-stroke calligraphy of the literatus Huang Tingjian (1045-1105), giving his running script collective form. Shen also exaggerated Huang’s left- and right-falling brush mannerisms to extend them, but his character forms in structure and spacing are more “forceful in slanting, strong in horizontal ease.” This work is a colophon done in 1505 for an album of painting and calligraphy by his younger brother, Shen Zhao, which no longer survives. Describing the painting, the calligraphy is strong and outstanding, steady and mature.(20110101)
