詠水仙花。書呈幸光和。與義上。 仙人緗色裘。縞衣以裼之。青帨紛委地。獨立東風時。吹香洞庭暖。弄影清晝遲。萬里北渚雲。亭亭竟何思。唯應園中客。能賦會真詩。

An outstanding leader in poetry circles in the interval between the Northern and Southern Song, his style underwent several changes as he was able to develop an outstanding and individual manner of his own much to the praise and admiration of contemporaries. Chen’s writings still survive in his Collection of Jianzhai. In this work is the poem “In Praise of Narcissus Blossoms,” in which Chen hoped that his friend would reciprocate with poetry as well. This verse is also found in Collection of Jianzhai, except for some differences in wording. In terms of the calligraphy, Chen Yuyi was known for his “pure and succinct strokes like that of his poetry, standing out in the dynasty during the early Shaoxing era.” The forms in the calligraphy here are archaic and straightforward, the style elegant and subdued for a pure and remote harmony all its own.(20101015)
