In 1399 he was summoned to serve as a Hanlin Academician and held the posts of Academician and then Academician Expositor. When the Chien-wen Emperor's throne was usurped, Fang died a martyr's death at the age of forty-six and was given the posthumous name Wen-cheng. Although his fame does not rest on his being an excellent calligrapher, traces of his indomitable character can be seen in his brushwork. The first eighteen lines of this piece were written in the standard script, the style of which here resembles that of the T'ang calligraphers Ou-yang Hsun and Liu Kung-chuan. The remainder of the work consists of four lines in larger characters in a particularly elegant yet forceful running script. For such fine calligraphy Fang was held to be first among his peers.
