His style name was Hsuan-tsai and he was known by the sobriquet Ssu-pai. He obtained the chin-shih degree in 1589 and went on to become the Minister of the Ministry of Rites. He was given the posthumous title Wen-min. Tung was exceptionally talented and accomplished as a calligrapher and painter; he was also a collector and an outstanding connoisseur. He frequently made free-copies and copies of old calligraphic works to the point that he would forget to eat or sleep. His ingenious semi-cursive and standard scripts were considered the best of his time. The "ta-tsung-po-yin" (seal of the great Tsung-po) seal impressed on this hanging scroll indicates that it was written after 1632, when Tung was summoned to this position. Tung enjoyed free-copying works by various calligraphers and creating a mysterious aura, capturing a spirit which lay somewhere between resemblance and non-resemblance. This scroll is a free-copy of Chang Hsu’s Inscription on a Minister's Wall is a free-copy of Chang's style, and roughly captures Chang's style, but the structure of Tung's characters and the brushwork reflect the influence of Hsu Hao (703-782).@#@@#@內容簡介(英文)@#@ Dong Qichang (style name Xuanzai, sobriquet Sibo) was a native of Huating, Jiangsu. A Presented Scholar of 1589, he served as Minister of Rites. He excelled at painting and calligraphy, amassing a large collection and being an excellent connoisseur. Marvelous at semi-standard script, he was unparalleled in his time. This scroll is impressed with “Seal of the Minister of Rites,” meaning it was done after Minister of Rites Zhan summoned him to that position. Dong excelled at copying the ancient masters, attaining wondrous results in spirit but not necessarily form. This is an abstracted copy of Zhang Xu’s inscription, capturing roughly his refined brushwork. The characters are stable and the brush animated, revealing features of Dong’s late style. (20121017)
