@#@@#@內容簡介(英文)@#@Lan Ying, a native of Qiantang (modern Hangzhou, Zhejiang), went by the style name Tianshu and the sobriquets Diesou, Xihu yanmin, and Dongguo laonong. Good at calligraphy and excelling at painting, his landscapes follow those of the Song and Yuan masters, especially taking after Huang Gongwang’s. He nonetheless formed his own style and also excelled at bird-and-flower as well as plum-blossom-and-bamboo subjects.
This painting, entrusted to the National Palace Museum from the Lanqian shanguan collection, depicts an ornamental rock and lotus blossom combination in elegantly light colors using cursive and untrammeled brushwork that is beautiful and refined. Lan Ying’s signature indicates he was imitating the lotus painting of Wang Yuan to which he added the rock after Wu Zhen. The lotus here, however, is done in the sketching-ideas manner, which is quite removed from the fine-line bird-and-flower painting of the Yuan artist Wang Yuan.
