@#@@#@內容簡介(英文)@#@This painting, entrusted to the National Palace Museum from the Lanqian shanguan collection, depicts a cluster of chrysanthemums along with several stalks of bamboo growing beside a rock. Based on the artist’s signature, this work is dated to the equivalent of 1539. The chrysanthemum leaves were done directly with washes of ink and then lines added for the veins. Strokes of ink were then used to outline the petals of the chrysanthemum blossoms. This technique of outlining blossoms and dabbing leaves indeed is similar to the flower painting of Chen Chun, but the painting here features stiffer brushwork, suggesting the work of a later artist to which Chen’s name was added.
Chen Chun, a native of Suzhou in Jiangsu, had the style name Daofu and later went by it, also taking the sobriquet Baiyang shanren. He excelled at painting flowers in the sketching-ideas manner, becoming a representative “sketching-ideas” painter of flowers in the Wu School during the middle Ming period.
