Daisies and wild flowers blanket the ground; behind the rocks red and violet peonies flourish in clusters and bunches of blossoms and buds that face up and down. The coloring of the flowers and leaves is delicately, almost invisibly pale. Contrast between heavy and pale coloring increases the feeling of distance. In the unpainted areas one can make out the traces of charcoal used to draw the painting’s preliminary sketches.
