Emperor Huizong appointed him as Doctor of Painting and Calligraphy; Mi also was Court Gentleman of Rites and known as “Mi Nangong.” Good at poetry, he excelled at painting and calligraphy, being an exceptional connoisseur, too. His family collection included many Jin and Tang calligraphies, so he called his studio “Treasuring the Jin.” In Mi’s view, Jin cursive script was best, claiming, “If a Jin calligrapher’s person is not in his cursive script, it is just a lesser work.” He often faithfully copied works of the Two Wangs. This is a copy of Wang Xizhi’s “Zeng Aihuai” in cursive script. From “Calligraphy of the Sanxi Hall,” it has fluid brushwork with both spirit and harmony.
